Solar Radio
There are multiple different types of solar radios. These
different solar radios all seem to come with their own features. If
you are thinking of buying a solar radio – as a gift, for emergencies,
or just for fun – you should first read over these options to
make sure that you get the best radio for you.
· Headset – Instead of a hand-held radio, consider an
AM/Big Sky Filet Mignon solar radio headset. These often have longer
hours of playback for fewer hours of charge. Look for one with the solar
panels right on top, so you can continue to charge the headset, even
while wearing it outside! Soltronix makes an excellent headset solar
radio.
· Wind up/hand cranked – Especially if you plan to use
your solar radio for emergency conditions, it is a good idea to have
wind up radio. Then, if your radio is not charged and it is dark outside,
you are not at a loss.
· LED emergency light – This is also a very good thing
to have on your solar radio if you are ever stuck in an emergency.
· VHF bands/weather broadcast – Again, if you plan on using
your solar radio mostly in emergency situations, it is a good idea to
have one that has a good weather broadcast.
· TV channels – Even without the picture screen, it can
be fun to listen to TV broadcasts.
· Antennae – You want to be sure that you have a very good
antennae. This way, even if you are in remote locations, you can still
get a broadcast.
· Earphone jack – When you have earphones on, you can listen
to your solar radio in privacy, without anyone bothering you.
· Built-in rechargeable battery pack – look for one that
will run your radio for a lengthy period of time (40 hours is pretty
good!)
